Mau (Uttar Pradesh): Riot-hit Mau in eastern Uttar Pradesh remained under curfew for the sixth day on Wednesday, though the town’s residents were allowed to collect essential commodities, including medicines and milk.
Police allowed the people to make their purchases between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., even as the situation arising out of Thursday’s communal clashes continued to remain tense.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Azamagarh Range) Rajendra Pal Singh described the overall situation as being under control with the help of round-the-clock patrolling, especially in sensitive areas.
He also confirmed the arrest of 350 persons to date, and added that the police was still looking out for local legislator Mukhtar Ansari, who has been charged with instigating the conflagration.
Meanwhile, train services via Mau are yet to be restored.
